Steps to prepare for a job interview
Even if you apply for a job or an internship, the interview comes into selection
processes. Being called for an interview means you did well “on paper” and you
have already passed the first selection criteria.
At the same time, this means you are in a very important point of the selection
process. To have missed the interview means to have canceled it all, no matter
how well you looked on your CV and application package.
This is why you always have to be prepared for the interview.
Before the interview:
Before you enter the room where the interview takes place, make sure
you know all the details of the job/program you are applying for, the questions
which may appear and how long will the interview last.
Even if the interview is just a test and therefore, you have to prepare, you
don’t need to expect the Inquisition. An interview’s objective is to put you, as
a candidate, in a good position. The interviewer wants to make an impression
about what kind of person you are, to make a complete image about you on top of
the things you have wrote in your CV. Therefore, you can expect at a serious
atmosphere, yet relaxed one, where you are the one who will talk.
Try to read as much as you can about the company/job you are applying for. If
you didn’t do that yet, you should better begin doing it. If we are talking
about a company, find out exactly what it does, if it is successful or not, what
is its position on the market, what others think about their culture, what is
the job about, how does a normal day in the company look like, etc.
Write down what you find unclear so that you can ask about at the end of the
interview.
Read the job announcement more than once. Examine the requirements, think about
the reasons and examples that can prove the fact that you are a perfect
candidate for the job. Yiu will, surely, receive questions about that during the
interview. Pay attention: do not exaggerate! And more important: do not lie- you
can never know how and where from they can find out the truth.
Try to find out how long will the interview last, who will interview you and, if
possible, which are the most interesting subjects for the interviewer and which
are most likely to appear during the interview. It is, of course, easier to find
this information if you receive a call to be invited to the interview but there
are other options too: searching on the company’s site or other persons who went
to the interview.
There are also some questions which may appear in every interview. Prepare your
answers and check them with a friend. Each interview has its own specific
questions but there are some which appear quite frequent.
During the interview:
Do not be late! Don’t make a wrong first impression.
In the interview day prepare a copy of the folder and the application package.
You might need it.
Dress formally! Even if you are one of those programmers whose clothes do not
matter, try to wear a costume or at least some pants and a shirt.
Some tips for the interview:
1. Try not to run the discussion speaking too much or too loud.
2. Don’t talk bad about your friends, competitors, teachers, etc
3. Don’t bring into discussion the financial aspects.
After the interview:
If you have the interviewer’s mail address, write an email to him/her to thank
him/her. This way:
1. You thank them for the time and the interesting discussion
2. You make them remember you better than the other 20 people that went to the
interview.
3. You emphasize those things which even if had been mentioned during the
interview, haven’t been generally in the center of the discussion but which
represent a major benefit for you. Try not to bring new arguments why you should
be selected.
4. You emphasize the most important elements of your folder which count the most
for the job.
The interview is not such a stressful situation, especially if you have
experience. This is why the before-preparation is essential, so do it carefully
because the next interview might change your life!
